Well, we didn’t quite make it through verse 17 of 1 John chapter 2 this week. We studied verses 12-14, and discussed the difference between spirituality and maturity. We talked about how ‘Spiritual Fathers’ become Fathers by experiencing and knowing God, not just by having knowledge about God.

We were encouraged by the ‘Young Men’ John was writing to. At that particular time in Ephesus, it must have been a very difficult time to overcome temptation and avoid sin, but these young men seemed to have succeeded by staying grounded and knowing God’s Word.

We also discussed how it’s not a bad thing to be a ‘Baby in the Faith’, but it’s not good to stay in that position for long. We all were there at one point in our walk with God, whether it was shortly after our conversion, or after coming back to the Lord, but as the Apostle Paul warns the church in Corinth: ‘You are still babes! I want to feed you with meat, but I have to deed you with the milk. You’re carnal, you think you know everything, but you know nothing!’.

Erik K. will be teaching next week, so you’re in for a treat! He will be picking up at verse 15, with the first of two dangers that threatens our fellowship with each other and with God.

Discussion Questions for 10/6

Up to last week in 1 John, we’ve looked at maintaining fellowship with God and fellow believers. Last week we looked at the marks of those who are in the Christian fellowship. How do you know you’re a Christian? How do you get assurance? How do you recognize other Christians? We were given those two tests in verses 3-11 of chapter 2 last week: obedience to the Lord’s commands, and love to our Christian brothers and to those around us.

This week, we will be studying verses 12-17 of chapter 2, where John addresses specific members of the church in verses 12-14 and in verses 15-17 he will give us the first of two dangers that threaten the fellowship.

How do you know if you’re a spiritual child, young man or father?
What is the difference between spirituality and maturity?
What keeps us from growing to that next level of spirituality and once we arrive, how do we stay there?

Notes from 9/29/09

This morning, we studied 1 John 2:3-11.

John continued to offer the Church in Ephesus assurance of their salvation, offering two indications or litmus tests of Authentic Christianity:

1) Moral Test – Are we obeying his commands?

2) Social Test – Are we loving others?

We had a great conversation about how we show our love for others by our actions. It’s not enough to just say we love our kids, our wives, etc. We need to let our actions (things we do OR shouldn’t do) back up our words or our words are worthless.

Discussion Questions for 9/22

This Tuesday, we’ll be looking at 1 John 1:8-2:2.

Please read these verses and come thinking about the following:

What is the connection between walking in the light and confessing sin? Is it possible to do these things without spending lots of time with God?

What difference does it make to you that you have an Advocate with the Father?

What has Christ done and is doing for you (1:7, 2:1-2)? What difference should his deeds make to the way you think and act?

Golf Tournament October 10th???

What would you guys think about a Mile High Calvary Men’s Golf Tournament, Saturday October 10th (weather permitting) at the Links, an executive golf course near Quebec and C-470? If you’d be up for it, please leave a comment below and if we have enough interest, I’ll start working on the details… (I originally requested October 3rd, but was notified that it is the date of the Women’s Brunch)

Today, we looked at 1 John 1:5-7. We talked about how God is Light, and how we can’t have fellowship with Him or with each other if we are walking in darkness. What does it mean that “God is Light”? One scholar summed it up well for us: ‘Light physically represents glory. Intellectually it represents truth. Morally it represents holiness’. So physically, if we can talk about God even in those terms, for God to be light speaks of His glory, His blinding majesty. Then to speak of light intellectually speaks of His truth, His wisdom, His precepts, His counsel, His word. To speak of light morally speaks of His holiness, His purity.

“You can never appreciate Calvary love until you appreciate the awesome holiness of God and your awful sinfulness!”
